The Brazen Brass is a rad quintet in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 2006 & made up of former music students from Ohio State University, Capital University, and Miami University, the group has a repertoire of classical, popular, holiday, and wedding music.

The ensemble has performed at a variety of venues, ranging from campus bars to farmers’ markets to the International Brass Chamber Music Festival.

The quintet is available for hire and can perform at your private or corporate event for a negotiable fee. Contact us for booking information.


Member Bios

Melissa Bontempo – trumpet
Melissa Originally from the Cleveland area, Melissa began playing trumpet at age nine under the direction of well-loved music educator Mr. Wayne Miller. She continued on to perform with Padua Franciscan High School’s award winning band, orchestra and stage band. During her ten-year hiatus from music performance, she received a BFA in graphic design from Ohio University, and an MA in Art Education from The Ohio State University. Her masters thesis on the role of online communities in museum education was published internationally in 2007. Currently, she is employed by the Ohio State University Department of Dance as a multimedia specialist. Upon joining the Brazen Brass, Melissa was grateful for the opportunity to reprise her performance skills in the constructive and affirming environment that such a unique ensemble provides.

Melissa Patridge – trumpet
Melissa has been playing the trumpet since age 10. She has performed with a variety of small and large ensembles, notably the All Star Brass Bands from 1992 to 1997. Melissa is a 2001 graduate of Miami University where she studied the fine art of trumpet playing under James Olcott and was a member of Tau Beta Sigma. Melissa received her second Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from DeVry University in 2002 and has also completed graduate level coursework in Women’s Studies at the Ohio State University. Melissa currently resides  with her husband Daniel and their three fat cats.

Holly Bowman – horn

Holly is currently chasing her five-year old son around, working on another son, and will update her bio soon! For now, we’ll just tell you that she studied at Capital University with Nicholas J. Perrini.

Annalisa Ventola – trombone
Annalisa Ventola began playing the trombone at the age of 16, studying with Andy Millat, principal trombonist of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, during high school, and Professor Joe Duchi at The Ohio State University in college. She graduated from OSU in 2002 with a B.A. in Music (piano and trombone) and a minor in Comparative Religions. Since then, she has been teaching and performing in Central Ohio and currently maintains a private teaching studio at Music on Maize along with her husband, Christopher Whitney . In addition to her musical activities, Annalisa is also a part-time researcher in the field of psychology. She studies anomalous/paranormal beliefs and experiences, and manages a non-profit organization in her niche of academia. When she’s not busy trying to keep up with her dual careers, Annalisa also enjoys photography, hanging out with her friends in Freight Train and random acts of kindness.

Carrie Frederick – tuba
Carrie has been playing tuba since 1988. They have performed with large wind ensembles, chamber ensembles, and jazz bands, and has toured both nationally and internationally. They studied with Sid Townsend at Capital University’s Conservatory of Music. They graduated from Capital in 1999, earning a BA in Communication with a Minor in Music with a performance emphasis. In addition to the Brazen Brass, Carrie performs regularly with Ain’t Misbehavin’, a traditional dixieland band. When they’re not behind the tuba, Carrie can be found playing bass guitar and bodhrán (a traditional Irish frame drum), or biking around Columbus.
